George Clinton (1941) is also known as 'The Godfather Of Superfunk' and 'Dr. Funkenstein'. He is the founding father of legendary funk bands like Funkadelic, Parliament, The Brides Of Funkenstein and the P-Funk All Stars. Big stars who used to play with Clinton's bands include Bootsy Collins and Bernie Worrell. |

A George Clinton performance is more than just a musical experience, it's a stage show, described by Clinton himself as a 'space soap opera monster rock extravaganza'. Several musicians who played for Brown later joined the P.Funk mob, including Bootsy Collins, Fred Wesley, Phelps Collins and Maceo Parker. They had a big impact on the sound, as it became cleaner and more groove-oriented. |

In 1980, George Clinton lost his
rights on Parliament & Funkadelic and put together all the P-Funk Mob with the P-Funk
All Stars. Even if the "Brides of Dr Funkeinstein" came out before the foundation of the "P-Funk All Stars", you know what ? The mothership connection is here. |

Though they never gathered together within the JB's, Bootsy Collins met Maceo when the latter was actually part of the James Brown-produced artists. After the split of Maceo -along with most of the cats- off the band in 1970, James Brown urgently substitute them by calling in Bootsy and his group of studio musicians -from Cincinatti, the Pacesetters, to become the "original" JB's. He will smoke under Brown's influence, then leave the Godfather by 1971 after an intense year of nastyful artistic production (among which the unforgettable "Sex Machine", Soul Power"...) to create his own "Bootsy's Rubber Band". From then, the meeting-fusion with George Clinton showed but unavoidable. The initiatic curse of Bootsy and Maceo under the successive masterhood of James Brown and George Clinton explains undoubtedly the perfect symbiosis between the two musicians. | |||
The Bootsy's "Best of" gathers 14 tracks among them 8 featuring Maceo Parker. Check out the devastating sax solo on the previously unissued live version of "Psychoticbumpschool", available only on this compilation. Trks : 1,2,3,4,6,8,9 & 14

Although the european version lists a 1972 recording of SOUTHWICK on its cover this recording is not included(at least I can't find it). This track is not on the US-version, too (I don´t know anything about the japanese version). US: AEM Records 1993; EU:Sequel Rec. 1994; J: P-Vine 1994 PARLAIMENT FUNKADELIC P.FUNK ALL STARS: Dope Dogs CD/LP 1995 with Maceo credited as musician, but as far as I know he said in an interview he didn´t record with Clinton at the time; might be older tracks (IMHO the same goes for Hey Man...Smell...) GEORGE CLINTON: Sample Some Of Disc And Some Of Dat Vol1, 2 & 3 CD/LP BCM Rec. 1993/94 three single CDs for DJs with samples, no musicians credited, but I guess Maceo is on of them GEORGE CLINTON FAMILY SERIES: Part 1 CD/LP Essential Rec. 1992 P.Funk sampler with Horny Horns on some tracks GEORGE CLINTON FAMILY SERIES: Part 2 CD/LP Essential Rec. 1993 P.Funk sampler with 1 track by Horny Horns and several others with Horny Horns GEORGE CLINTON FAMILY SERIES: Part 3 (P Is The Funk) CD/LP Essential Rec. 1993 P.Funk sampler with Horny Horns on several tracks; 1 track with Maceo on Clavinet&Organ GEORGE CLINTON FAMILY SERIES: Part 4 (Testing Positive 4 The Funk) CD/LP Essential Rec. 1993 P.Funk sampler with Horny Horns credited on 1 track GEORGE CLINTON FAMILY SERIES: Part 5 (A Fifth Of Funk) CD/LP Essential Rec. 1995 P.Funk sampler with Horny Horns on several tracks GEORGE CLINTON & THE P-FUNK ALL STARS: P-Funk Unreleased Remix CD 1994 Japan-only release with remixes of FAMILY SERIES tracks and 1 new track (COMMENT: on the FAMILY SERIES albums not all musicians are listed for every song, so it´s not quiet sure on how many Maceo blows his horn) GEORGE CLINTON: Greatest Funkin' Hits: CD/LP Capitol Rec. 1996 Rap-Remakes of older P.Funk songs BOOTSY´S RUBBER BAND: Jungle Bass EP Island Rec. 1990 4-track EP mixture of funk & house, prod. by B. Laswell BOOTSY´S NEW RUBBER BAND: Blasters Of The Universe 2-CD Rykodisc 1994 second CD contains only instrumentals PARLET: Pleasure Principle LP Casablanca 1978 female P.Funk band SWEAT BAND: Sweat Band LP SONY 1980 Bootsy-produced band with a great instrumental by Maceo GODMAMA: Here LP Elektra 1981 Bootsy-produced band COMMENT: Most of the listed albums are released in different versions in different countries. Of course 12"/maxi-CD releases exist to many of the albums. I can help here, too. Some of the P.Funk albums credit PARLIAMENT as guest musicians, so it´s possible Maceo plays on some of them, too. Another addition to Maceo´s solo releases: MACEO PARKER: In The Game 12" Rhythm Attack Productions 1989 includes two versions of Natural Woman feat. Carleen Aderson MACEO PARKER: Keep Your Soul Together 12"/Maxi-CD rap-project; 3 versions (12": 2 versions) + 2 versions of Well You Needn't Thanks to FF Gap for all this additional stuff |
