Arson Suspect James Brown's Cousin, Bodyguard

Richard Glenn, also charged with forgery and theft, allegedly set fire to the singer's office building.

Contributing Editor Eric Schumacher-Rasmussen reports:

Richard Glenn, the man charged with forging a check from James Brown and setting fire to the singer's Augusta, Ga., office building, was Brown's personal bodyguard and a longtime friend — as well as his first cousin once removed.
"I imagine Mr. Brown's reaction will be a little like Julius Caesar's when Brutus stabbed him," Brown's lawyer, Buddy Dallas, said on Thursday (May 18). Brown returned to his Beech Island, S.C., home from a concert appearance late Wednesday night, and Dallas had not spoken to him at press time.
Glenn is the son of Willie Glenn, Brown's first cousin and childhood friend. Dallas said Brown hired the younger Glenn as a favor to his friend.
According to Dallas, Glenn, 39, had been employed by Brown to act as a "bodyguard presence" for the singer and employees of James Brown Enterprises, which burned April 28. Glenn was charged Tuesday with first-degree arson, felony forgery and misdemeanor theft.
Dallas said the fire causes $450,000 in damage to the office, which handled Brown's business activities, concert promotions and programming for WAAW-FM, the singer's Augusta radio station. Employees of James Brown Enterprises would not answer questions Thursday.
In addition to memorabilia from Brown's concert and movie appearances, the fire destroyed unreleased master tapes, including a recording of a concert at the storied Apollo Theater in New York's Harlem. Dallas said he was not sure when that concert was recorded. Brown's 1963 album, Live at the Apollo, is one of the best-selling live albums of all time.

James Brown Employee Arrested In Arson Fire

Authorities say worker set blaze that damaged singer's office building to destroy evidence of alleged forgery.
Contributing Editor Eric Schumacher-Rasmussen reports:
One of R&B legend James Brown's own employees was arrested Tuesday and charged with setting the blaze that burned the singer's Augusta, Ga., office building April 28.
Richard Glenn, 39, of Augusta was arrested by Richmond County Sheriff's officers and charged with arson in the first degree, according to Maj. Ken Autry of the sheriff's department.
Glenn also was charged with misdemeanor theft and felony forgery. Glenn allegedly stole a check from James Brown Enterprises, which handles the singer's business dealings, concert arrangements and programming for WAAW-FM, the Augusta radio station Brown owns.
The building contained much of Brown's personal memorabilia, including gold records and stage costumes.
Autry said Glenn opened a bank account and deposited the $75,000 check, which was made out to him. This tipped off authorities, Autry said, and they began investigating Glenn in connection with the fire. He also said investigators believe the worker set fire to the building to destroy evidence linking him to the forgery.

Woodstock Friday: James Brown, Live, Mud, and More
ROME, N.Y. - Amidst heat, mud, lots of bared breasts (both male and female) - and, of course, music - Woodstock '99 got off to its official start on Friday and seemed to be following the path of its 1969 and 1994 predecessors. Following a benediction from a group of Zen Buddhist monks, the Godfather of Soul, James Brown, provided a musical blessing with a glitzy set of such R&B classics as "I Got You (I Feel Good)," "Cold Sweat," and "Get Up Offa That Thing." Brown's troupe nodded to a couple of Woodstock '69 heroes as well, with backup singer Tanya Ray singing a bit of Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz" and one of his guitarists playing licks from Jimi Hendrix's version of "The Star Spangled Banner" and his "Foxy Lady."

Brown also offered an odd tribute to the late John F. Kennedy Jr. - "Let's hear it for the Kennedy family!" - while Live was more reverent, dedicating "Lightning Crashes," the closing song of its passionate and powerful set, to both Kennedy and his father, the slain President John F. Kennedy.

James Brown Gives Money for Gun Locks

The citizens of Augusta, Ga., James Brown's hometown, must be feeling good - and safer - right about now. The Godfather of Soul recently donated $4,000 so the city can purchase 1,000 gun locks to give to local gun owners, reports the Associated Press. The mayor of the city, Bob Young, approached the singer after hearing of the success of a similar program in Hendersonville, Tenn. "It was not a hard sell at all because Mr. Brown is concerned about the kids and he loves this community," says the mayor.

James Brown Ordered to Rehab

It may be a man's world, but James Brown still needs to live by the rules. The sixty-four-year-old rock-and-roll legend has been ordered into a ninety-day drug rehab program after pleading no contest on Friday to illegally firing a rifle while under the influence. The "Hardest-Working Man
in Showbiz" has six months to complete the program. The charges stem from an incident last January 15 during which deputies arrived at Brown's Beech Island, South Carolina, home to take him to the hospital after his daughter reported that he was behaving strangely. Among the items the Godfather of Soul had lying around: two rifles and discharged shell casings. Police also found a small stash of marijuana, which the singer claims he uses for medicinal purposes. Brown, who spent less than a week in the hospital, later surrendered to police on one count of misdemeanor marijuana possession and two counts of use of a firearm while under the influence of drugs.

Brown has denied that he's addicted to any drugs, and he claims his daughter hospitalized him against his will when he became upset after watching a TV show on poverty-stricken children in South America. At the time he was admitted, Brown's agent said his client had become dependent on painkillers after suffering from a back injury. The musician, who served three years in prison for a 1988 conviction on weapons and assault charges, later explained that he needed the guns: "I got to have protection," Brown told the Augusta, Georgia, Chronicle. "I have guns and I'm going to keep on having guns. Thank God it's a free country."

Ow! James Brown Arrested
James Brown, who checked out of the hospital last week after being treated for an alleged addiction to painkillers, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with marijuana possession and unlawful use of a firearm. The charges stem from the drugs and guns found by police at Brown's Beech Island, South Carolina, home when they took him to the hospital on January 15. He was not charged until Tuesday, when sheriff's officials asked him to turn himself in.

The sixty-four-year-old Godfather of Soul was released on bond, and he quickly explained that he uses the kind bud for medicinal reasons. "I have bad eyes," he told Augusta, Georgia's Chronicle newspaper. "It was just a little tiny bit. It wasn't even a misdemeanor." Brown also denied his agent's statement last week that he was admitted to the hospital because of an addiction to painkillers, alleging his daughter committed him against his will. "My daughter made a mistake," he told the paper, "She should have just called me and asked if she could come over and check on me, but she called the police. Then they came and asked me if I would go to the hospital, and I didn't want to say no."

Brown, who served three years behind bars after being convicted in 1988 on assault and weapons charges, says he still plans to keep guns in his home. "I got to have protection," he said, "I have guns and I'm going to keep on having guns. Thank God it's a free country." After his release, the "Hardest Working Man in Show Business" began rehearsals for an upcoming world tour.
If tried and convicted, Brown could be sentenced to two years in prison and a $4,000 fine.

James Brown Released From Hospital
After only a week of hospital food, James Brown is feeling pretty good indeed. The music legend was released on Wednesday from the South Carolina hospital where he was undergoing treatment for an addiction to painkillers and a back injury. "Everybody's making a big deal of nothing. He's fine," his agent, Jeff Allen, said. The sixty-nine-year-old Godfather of Soul "reluctantly" checked into the Columbia hospital on January 15 to break a dependency to painkillers, which he began taking after injuring his back while attempting the splits onstage during a recent show. Brown's attorney,
Albert Davis, says the "hardest-working man in show business" is expected to make a full recovery. "He's been on the road for six years and he's just exhausted," Dallas said. "Nobody half his age keeps the schedule he does. He's fine and he'll be fine."

James Brown Hospitalized for Addiction
James Brown was feeling good, apparently a little too good. The Godfather of Soul has been admitted to a South Carolina hospital for an addiction to painkillers. "James recently hurt his back and became dependent on painkillers, so he's presently in the hospital trying to break that dependency and also have his back looked at," said his agent, Jeff Allen. No word on which medical center the sixty-nine-year-old Brown is in, but it's described as one "where people go to break dependencies." According to Allen, Brown injured his back while trying to do the splits onstage. Some reports have indicated that Brown's family admitted him to the hospital against his will, but Allen would say only, "He was reluctant to go, but not [that] reluctant. He knew he had to go and he went." Allen did confirm that weapons were found in Brown's home. "James Brown likes guns, and he wasn't threatening anybody with them. He wasn't committing a crime. The Constitution allows you to own guns." Brown was released from prison in 1991 after serving two years for weapons and assault convictions. His third wife, Adrienne, died in January of 1996 from PCP and prescription drugs, which she was taking following liposuction.

Music Legends in Blues Brothers Sequel

Blues Brothers 2000, John Landis's sequel to his 1980 comedy, will be a who's who of rock-and-roll legends. In addition to Aretha Franklin, who will reprise her role as a long-suffering restaurant owner married to a member of the band, James Brown will return as the Right Rev. Cleophus James. The
sequel will also include appearances by B.B. King, Junior Wells, Sam Moore, Wilson Pickett, and Taj Mahal. And be on the lookout for cameos from contemporary artists such as Blues Traveler, Erykah Badu, and teenage bluesman Jonny Lang. Paul Shaffer, David Letterman's sidekick, is supervising the music for the Universal film, which stars Dan Aykroyd and John Goodman. It's set for release early next year.

Ow! I Feel Rolonda! James Brown Proposes to Talk Show Hostess

From our "things that make you go ewwwwwwwww!" file, we bring you news of James Brown, famed musician and wife-beater, and his proposal to Rolonda Watts, famed sleaze-hawker and talk show hostess. Now, we're not saying this is just a desperate attempt by the sixty-something Godfather of Soul to revive his sagging career with a little publicity, but he did ask Ms. Watts, thirty-seven, to marry him during a taping of her ratings-famished talk show. "Darling, we've been trying to keep this thing quiet, but I think it's time we let people know," said Brown. "You know I'm crazy about you, so how about tying the knot?" Rolonda didn't give him an answer, saying only, "We're going to continue this discussion on the phone later, James." Lest you think Brown is simply kidding, the two have been dating a couple months. "I had no idea that the time I was spending with James would take such a serious turn," said Watts.
